SUSANVILLE / LASSEN COUNTY, Calif. — October 27, 2026. The Bureau of Land Management’s Eagle Lake Field Office received a $127,600 California State Parks grant for annual ground-operations maintenance at the Fort Sage and Rice Canyon off-highway-vehicle areas, the state announced October 27.

Why this matters to residents

These northern California high-desert recreation areas depend on route upkeep and responsible off-road access. The funded scope is described as routine ground operations rather than new land purchases, a campground opening or an expansion of designated roads.

What has not been confirmed

A grant award does not verify any particular route has reopened, a project has finished or current trail conditions are safe. Visitors should check BLM advisories for weather, fire conditions, closures and designated routes.
